The Southeast Asia Institute warmly congratulates Arrizal A. Jaknanihan on the publication of his article, 'Why is economic interdependence not weaponised? Security constraints on geoeconomic coercion in Southeast Asia', in the Australian Journal of International Affairs.

Drawing on the concept of comprehensive security, the article asks why Southeast Asian states have largely refrained from weaponising their economic policies despite rising geoeconomic tensions globally. Arrizal argues that the region's deep integration into the global economy has elevated the security costs of coercion and weakened the institutional capacity of states to deploy it, with open economic ties remaining central to the regime legitimacy on which ruling leaders depend.

Arrizal presented an earlier version of this article at the ANU Southeast Asia Institute (SEAI) Student Research Symposium in 2024, and it is a particular pleasure to see work presented in that symposium now appearing in one of the region's leading IR journals. Our warmest congratulations.
